recycled jumper dress

This cardigan was damaged and I could only salvage parts of it. The fair isle design of little girls, houses, crowns and "home sweet home" was so gorgeous I wanted to make something for my little girls from it.
I decided to make this pinafore/dress. 

When sewing jumpers I find it better to do a straight stitch and then neaten and seal the seams with a zig-zag stitch. Overlocking tends to put the pieces out of shape. Pressing and steaming is also important.

I used bands from a navy jumper for binding the neck and sleeves. I literally used it like a bias binding, machine stitching it on one side then finishing on the good side with hand stitching. 

I had to "make do" a bit on the back panel because of the damage to the original jumper so it has three panels.

 

The pocket is made from the sleeve band. Wanda looks very cute in it and fortunately she managed to stay still long enough for me to photograph her....not that she was happy about it!

I have just started a recycled jumper/sweater pinterest board  - so far mostly sister outlaws things but I hope to add more recycling inspiration there.

Winter Woollies at Gleaners!

These  lovely vintage kids knits are heading to Gleaners inc. Unfortunately the twins were not very good at standing still and doing the knitting-pattern-book-poses.

They have forgotten that at the height of their short lived modelling career, they did indeed appear in a knitting pattern book. Everyone say, "awwwwwwww....."

My jumper says, "Hi!"

 Why  don't you come and say "Hi!" back?

 You see kids, it's all been "in" before. 

The sister outlaws have got vintage south western style jumpers....

 AND geometric design jumpers...

And I don't think there is a name for this last one. It's the strangest jumper ever! A fuji/xerox jumper...

Vintage Knitwear For Sale!

Sorting through the sister outlaw's stash of jumpers usually gives me a giggle or two. I'm always astounded at some of the crazy things people will design and render wool! For  example...a beach scene...

.. or a tropical island....

or how about tropical fish?

I mean, does someone go, "Well what would look good in a winter woolly garment? Um...I know... How about something hot and tropical?"

Our stall at the Fitzroy Market this Saturday the 19th of May will have every sort of knit you have ever thought of and some you could never imagine.
